Smart Authors Wisely Use KeyWords

Have you ever searched for a book on Amazon – under the keyword terms which would most resonate with you – only to find the author had never included keywords in the marketing tags?  Don’t make the same mistake and miss out on a large portion of your audience!

Each book that is sold on Amazon can be “tagged” with salient key words that improve how easily potential readers can search for it.  When combined with adding the book to an author’s “Listmania” – which is also keyword driven – you will find great excitement in watching your sales increase.  The following quick tips will help you focus on using the right words that draw readers to your book:

1. Make a list of the top 10 keywords you feel people will associate with your book.  Put yourself in your reader’s mind…what do you really feel they would type in when trying to find you or your book? Thinking clearly and succinctly about how you personally would conduct that search will help you narrow down your keywords and select those most likely to draw the audience you had in mind when you originally wrote your book.

2. Once you are comfortable (and possibly a bit excited) about the keywords you have selected, run an Amazon and a Google search and get a bird’s eye view of what your competition is using. Don’t seek to duplicate them; vary your terms to give yourself that unique positioning, and try throwing in a few extra keywords which will support that uniqueness.

3. Following the competitive search, keep a list of those tags | keywords and use them on your website, in your marketing collateral, in your media kit, and in all directories on which you may list your book.  The book synopsis should also mirror many of those keywords; however, don’t think you have to use all of them in every script – just make sure they become a solid part of your marketing and book promotion focus.
